London, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/15/2015 -- Reflector Day was first celebrated in Finland on October 1st, 2013. Dedicating an entire day to the pedestrian reflector in particular was seen by the Finnish Road Safety Council – Liikenneturva as a way to remind everybody to make sure they have one, as October to March is the dark season in the northern hemisphere.
VisiBel Reflective Accessories creates pedestrian reflectors which can be worn as an accessory in addition to making the wearer visible to vehicle drivers in the dark - the latter being the original function of a reflector. Many don't wear a reflector not because they don't think it's a good idea, but because they find that the existing options are geared too much towards sporting outfits, and not everyday clothing. At the same time, greater awareness of the need of pedestrians to be visible in traffic is also necessary.
According to The National Society for Road Safety of Sweden, about 40% of traffic accidents involving pedestrians happen due to the pedestrian not being visible enough in the dark. Interestingly, these accidents happen most often in cities. Sweden is one of the safest countries in the world when it comes to traffic fatalities, and reflector wear is popular among pedestrians.
Visibel Reflector Accessories is launching the Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to bring its reflective accessories to market, and to create greater awareness about reflectors as a way to be better noticeable in traffic when it is dark out, especially in the US and UK, where reflectors are currently under-utilized compared to the Nordic countries. We believe that if everybody does their part, traffic can be much safer for all.
