Exercise Program Do's and Don'ts

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/18/2014 --Exercise is beneficial in any form, but for those creating a well-balanced program that they will follow for any length of time there are certain steps they should follow to make the program effective. There is a method to the madness of planning a workout routine, and here are some things to avoid when planning a routine.

A common goal among those creating a workout program is to lose body-fat and become healthier overall. In order to achieve this, be sure to schedule resistance training prior to cardio exercise. Research has shown that engaging in cardio before strength or resistance training can actually slow down body-fat reduction and may actually prevent gains in strength. A good workout should be organized with a warm-up, engagement in resistance or strength training followed by cardio-vascular training or aerobic exercise, and finished with joint mobility and flexibility exercises.

When planning out a strength training program, be sure to hit all the muscle groups in each workout, or alternate different groups on different days. Yes, we may want larger arms or thinner legs and think that engaging in only those exercises will bring faster results, but this assumption is untrue. Performing exercises that only target one area of the body can leave one feeling unbalanced, and will not result in spot reduction or bring quicker results than full body training would.

Speaking of quick results, one of the biggest mistakes people make is giving up on a program or changing its focus when they don’t see immediate improvement in their physique or strength. In order to lose weight and gain strength, diet and exercise are both necessary and reducing calories combined with physical movement will eventually lead to weight loss, but it won’t happen overnight. A good amount to lose is 1 to 1.5 pounds each week as more than this can lead to loss of muscle or result in injury.

Give a program six to eight weeks before changing the focus to ensure the body has time to adapt before working into a new challenge.
