The Torc of Anubis is a new fantasy novel with a post-millennial feminist hero

That's changing as women begin to add their own take on the male dominated genre. Joining the ranks of such female authors as Patricia Briggs and Charlaine Harris, K. Ione Kellerhals has released her own twist on the urban fantasy genre in The Torc of Anubis. In Ms. Kellerhals’ first novel, a female avatar named Liadan is challenged to protect the world from the nightmares of the other realms. Combining a blend of mythology with the energy of a graphic novel is no mean feat. Like Ilona Andrews, K. Ione Kellerhals succeeds in creating a powerful, independent female warrior.

In the Torc of Anubis there are no angelic choirs, no gospels, no hymns. Liadan Aswarde is not that kind of avatar.

The Torc of Anubis: is one of seven ancient Seals used to separate reality into different realms. But the Torc also holds the power of Anubis, granting the ability to control the undead to those who normally lack the gift. A weak necromancer’s apprentice coming into possession of such a powerful relic, for example, would be very bad news. "The Torc of Anubis" is, at its core, an urban fantasy story. The stakes are high, the feats are incredible, the fights dramatic, and the protagonists larger than life. What sets it apart from other stories in its genre, though, is the incredible amount of thought put into this world and its inhabitants.

The relationship between Liadan and her familiar is funny, sad and just really complicated in this great great way. I really hope the next book comes out soon.
