Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/04/2015 -- When it comes to sharing children's collective thirst for life and adventure, nobody is a closer cousin that the much-loved monkey. In her powerful new book, Kat Michels introduces children to ten cheeky primates who are not only about to get up to some mischief, but invite children along to join them and learn new words.

Aptly titled '10 Cheeky Monkeys', this colorful and energetic volume has kids counting, expanding their vocabulary and trying to tame their new monkey friends as they share their wild adventure.

Synopsis:

What kind of trouble can 10 cheeky monkeys, with nothing else to do, get into? Find out when you meet these mischievous, penitent and sassy monkeys. Check out the glossary in the back for the definitions of 18 fun vocabulary words, and reinforce counting skills with your little one as the 10 monkeys dwindle down to 1 solitary monkey. But never fear, there's a happy ending for our intrepid primates!

"There's a huge range of counting/vocabulary books out there, and also plenty of children's books about monkeys. I've fused the two formats into something extremely unique, geared to both young and older children," explains Michels, an award-winning writer.

Continuing, "Our monkeys aren't silly – they are whimsical and studious. Through bold illustrations provided by A. Sutton, kids can find clues to new words, take an educated guess at their meaning and then use the book's fun glossary to get the exact definition. It's all about pushing them to find answers for themselves and take an active role in their learning – but to them it will only seem like they're having fun!"

Michels sees huge potential for her work.

"A book such as this is in vital demand. Everyone knows that vocabularies among the younger generation are not as vast and eclectic as those of their parents and grandparents. It's because children are not being exposed to a wide range of words, and this book was designed to fix that," she adds.

About Kat Michels
It seems like everyone is all about being diverse and having varied interests, until it comes down to a profession. When choosing a profession, you are supposed to choose one thing, one thing only and stick to that come hell or high water. Find your niche and burrow in! It's not even enough to say that you are a writer. You have to identify if you are you a journalist, a children's book author, a poet, a technical writer, etc. All of the above, is not an accepted answer.

Well to that I say, "Phhbbttt!" I choose all of the above. I wrote the narratives to two multi-award winning short-form documentaries. I wrote a stop-motion animated short that is currently in production. I write children's books. I fill journals with poetry. I am finishing my first historical fiction novel. I am a blogger. I write profiles highlighting the extraordinary deeds of heroines in our American history and I am a theatre critic. Ask me two months from now, and I will probably have something new to add to this list.

At the end of the day, what it all boils down to is stories, and the medium or market makes no difference to me. I believe that every place, everything, everyone has a story to tell if only you are willing to pay attention and dig deep enough. I see stories where others simply see information. Where others see a story, I see the better story: the one that is hidden beneath the obvious minutiae at the surface, the one that truly gets to the heart of the matter, the crux of the soul. I find the story that you didn't even know existed, but once it's revealed feels like home.

I am a storyteller. All are welcome. Grab a blanket, pull up a chair, and tell me what kind of story you'd like to hear today.
