Cheese is expected to continue to increase in 2013, registering 3% current value growth. The continued growth is mainly due to the ongoing home dining trend, which was triggered by prolonged deflation, as well as by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. In addition, whilst cheese has traditionally been perceived by Japanese consumers as a product to be eaten on its own or served with bread as a snack, many Japanese consumers started to use cheese as an ingredient in various recipes, ranging from pizza to Japanese and Chinese dishes, towards the end of the review period.

Turkish consumers have a strong tea culture and are regular consumers of black tea, which is consumed throughout the day and served before meals in restaurants and cafes across the country. Consumers usually prefer affordable options in flexible paper/plastic or flexible plastic packaging. Loose tea in flexible paper/plastic is traditional in Turkey rather than tea bags in folding cartons. Currently, 84% of the total tea sales in Turkey are accounted for by loose tea, with the remainder split between tea bags and tea pods.

Japan is facing an ageing population, combined with a declining birth rate. Over the review period, the number of Japanese people aged 65 and over increased by a CAGR of 2%. At the same time, the birth rate declined from 8.5 per 1,000 population in 2007 to 8.0 in 2012. This demographic shift indicates the decline of the consumer group of chocolate confectionery, which continued to contract gradually over the review period. Furthermore, summers are becoming longer in Japan. Summer is the season in which chocolate confectionery sees the worst sales. The combined double effect of demographic shifts and changes in the weather is leading to the continuous contraction of chocolate confectionery, which is expected to see a negligible decline in current value terms in 2013.

Stand-up pouches were only recently introduced in canned/preserved food, yet maintained a steady increase in shares due to their low cost, practicality and variety. Canned/preserved food is traditionally sold in metal cans, which had no re-sealable closures forcing consumers to use the contents immediately once the package is opened. Over the review period, consumers preferred glass jars which had metal screw closures, enabling them to use the contents in small portions. In some categories, the shift from metal food cans to glass jars was very significant. For example, in canned/preserved fish/seafood, the share of metal food cans fell from 95% in 2008 to 70% in 2013.

Baby food packaging sales grew slightly in off-trade volume terms in 2013 to reach 323 million units. Positive growth was mainly driven by the strong performance of prepared baby food. As the number of working mothers increased in Japan, consumers are looking for easier and more convenient baby food options. Also, there has been a gradual shift in consumer preference, with mothers using prepared baby food in order to spend more time interacting with their infants rather than cooking homemade food, which used to be perceived as a sign of a mother's love for her baby. This trend contributed to the overall growth in baby food packaging unit volume sales in the review period.

Tobacco packaging witnessed a reversal of growth trends in 2012, with sales rising by just under 1% in unit volume terms. This was due to a sharp sales decline in 2011. The March 2011earthquake hit the Tohoku area, damaging production facilities of Japan Tobacco Inc. In addition to the supply shortage of Japan Tobacco Inc, consumer sentiment following the earthquake fell, discouraging smoking and drinking, especially outside home. One year after the earthquake consumer confidence was rising once more, and the 2010 tax increase effect was mitigated, leading to tobacco consumption growth, and consequently packaging sales saw a slightly positive performance in 2012.

Off-trade volume sales of chilled processed food packaging decreased by less than 1% in 2013 to reach 27.9 billion units. As consumer awareness of health and wellness issues increased, they chose to eat fresh food rather than chilled or other types of processed food. Also, the declining population in Japan led to a reduction in the overall consumption of chilled processed food.

Excluding the small RTD tea category, still bottled water was the most dynamic soft drink during the review period, owing to the hot summer seasons. Turkey now has one of the highest per capita rates in Western Europe at 146 litres. Although PET bottles accounted for over 95% of total still bottled water packaging, the exclusive market niche of mineral waters in glass bottles is a growing trend in Turkey. Kestane Su and Reina Su launched glass bottles in 2011, and Pinar, Sirma and Damla followed suit in 2012. Glass bottles tend to be used in bars, restaurants and other foodservice channels rather than in retail due to the strong demand among consumers due to the perceived elegance and quality of the products.

Tobacco sales in Turkey saw dramatic developments during 2012 which impacted significantly on the trend for tobacco packaging. For the first time since 2008 both tobacco and tobacco packaging saw volume growth in 2012. In cigarettes, which form the overwhelming part of tobacco sales, volumes rose on the back of reduced black market sales and, towards the end of the year, stockpiling ahead of an imminent tax increase. Sales of smoking tobacco also rose sharply, although this had a negligible impact on overall tobacco packaging as smoking tobacco sales remain limited. On the other hand cigar sales collapsed, following a sharp tax increase. As a result of the revisions to the source industry, tobacco packaging volumes from 2012 onwards have been restated, in the current edition.
