On 23 July 2013, two earthquakes struck the Cook Strait, 30km east of Seddon. The 5.8 magnitude and 6.5 magnitude earthquakes rocked the upper South Island and lower North Island during 2013, with Wellington residents being particularly affected. Earthquake damage was concentrated within the Wellington CBD, particularly Manners Mall, Cuba Street and Featherstone Street.
