Manchester metropolitan region, in the aftermath of the global economic downturn, is coping with high unemployment and striving to revive its economy. Unemployment nearly doubled in recent years. Lower productivity and higher unemployment have resulted in a lower household disposable income level in the city compared with the rest of the UK. Only 27% of Manchester's population aged 15 or over has higher education, versus 31% elsewhere in the UK.
