As the South African economy thrives, consumer incomes are growing and lifestyles are improving. As people find that they can increasingly afford to include a wide variety of high-quality foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables in their daily diets, the need to rely on hunger busting starchy roots is rapidly fading away. This trend had a major impact on demand for starchy roots during 2013, limiting total volume growth to 1%.
