New Market Research Report: Cheese in South Africa

LogoThere was an increasing trend towards fixed-weight hard cheese over the review period. This may be due in some part to the fact that unpackaged hard cheese is considered less hygienic, as it has been handled by more people. It also helps consumers purchase cheese within a budget.

Now Available: Heating Appliances in Argentina

LogoDomestically manufactured heating appliances supply remains insufficient and did not satisfy demand in 2013. Import restrictions have negatively affected the area for a long time as the market was previously supplied almost entirely by imported products, mainly from China. However, during winter 2013, as a result of lower import barriers, it was possible to find more product variety in retailers. Heating appliances retail volume sales increased by 2% to reach 700,000 units in 2013. According to...

Herbal/Traditional Products in Venezuela - New Market Research Report

After the initial success of brands like Prospan, other players entered the trend and launched Hedera Helix-based cough remedies. The most recent launch was Tersatoril by the successful firm...

Recent Study: Homeshopping in Japan

LogoHomeshopping in Japan declined in current value by 2% in 2013. The remarkable expansion of internet retailing throughout Japan towards the end of the review period continued to have a negative effect on homeshopping overall during 2013. Homeshopping in Japan can be divided into two major formats: TV homeshopping and catalogue homeshopping. Catalogue homeshopping involves products selected from catalogues and ordered over the telephone or through mail order and this format accounted for the...

New Market Research Report: Juice in Latvia

LogoIn 2013 juice continued to recover after the economic crisis of 2009, which led to the 27% decline in volume sales in 2008-2009. As juice is considered to be a healthy and organic product, parents usually prefer buying juice for their kids instead of carbonate drinks. In addition, people drink more juice during illness, and are also combining them with strong alcohol, for example vodka. A big role has been played by cap and package innovations, and as a result it has made juice more attractive...

"Home Care in Finland" Published

LogoAlthough growth of home care current value sales was slow in 2013, it was slightly faster than in the preceding year. However, the growth in 2013 was partly due to increased VAT rates from January 2013 (up from 23% to 24%). The home care market indeed faced challenges in 2013 as the Finnish economy experienced a small downturn and the unemployment rate increased slightly. As a result customer purchasing power was put under strain and demand was thus sluggish, unable to supersede the CAGR for...

RTD Tea in Slovenia - New Report Available

LogoRTD tea continued to show declines in total volume and current value sales in 2013 as Slovenia's economic crisis led consumers to reduce non-essential spending. Rising health awareness also undermined demand in the category, as these products tend to be high in sugar and artificial additives. As a result of these trends, total volume and current value declines were larger than the corresponding averages for the entire review period.

"Noodles in the Netherlands" Published

LogoNoodles noted a strong value growth in 2013 and thus continued its positive development in the Netherlands. In the review period, the rise of noodles was often explained by the fact that foodservice in the Netherlands is struggling. Instead of ordering takeaway or home delivery of Asian food, Dutch consumers would prepare noodles themselves. But in 2012, Asian foodservice providers showed healthy growth, whilst retail noodles continued to rise too. Since there are a lot of Asian cooking shows...

New Market Study, "Other Pet Food in Chile", Has Been Published

LogoOther pet food continued to perform well in 2012, with total volume and current value growth rates surpassing those recorded the previous year for the second year in a row. This improvement was underpinned by robust growth in the other pet population, with busier lifestyles and rising urbanisation encouraging more and more Chileans to keep birds, fish, small mammals and other pets that required less space and were easier to care for than dogs and cats. New launches and improvements in...

New Market Research Report: Retailing in India

Logo2013 was a good year for retailing in India as income levels increased for much of the Indian population. Improvements in the economy encouraged consumers to spend more, benefiting non-grocery retailers particularly. Furthermore, improvements in the availability of a wide range of brands from luxury goods to basic private label products gave consumers more options to choose from and also boosted awareness of particular brands and products, supporting growth across retailing during 2013.

New Market Research Report: Gum in Kenya

LogoGum is acquiring a new image shifting from a recreational product to more of a functional product used to freshen the breath, especially among middle-income and high-income consumer groups. This is one of the principal contributing factors to the growth being recorded in gum in Kenya, a trend which is likely to continue develop during the forecast period and beyond, in what is becoming an increasingly image-conscious society. The predicted current value growth rate for 2013 is 7%.

New Market Research Report: Sweet and Savoury Snacks in Singapore

New Market Research Report: Finland Telecommunications Report Q2 2014

LogoWhile many aspects of the Finnish telecoms market appear to have reached saturation, BMI still identifies a number of opportunities for operators in the market. Wireline, in particular, has seen growth slow right down, with 2013 growth of around 3% in broadband subscriptions. Fixed line telephones continue to rapidly decline, with little hope for a rebound or even a slow down expected in the near term. Growth in the mobile market dipped below 2% in 2013 compared to 2012, reaching penetration of 181.9%, one of the highest in the region. We therefore see content, data and the provision of these services through next-generation technologies as key to the market's development. Fibre optics in the wireline sector are growing slowly but steadily and can be used for the provision of IPTV and other over-the-top content, which we see becoming an important driver. For mobile operators, the auction of 800MHz spectrum will undoubtedly help in delivering 4G services across a wider coverage and continued generation of income from mobile data. Backed by high spending ability of Finnish consumers, we continue to remain bullish on these opportunities in the Finnish telecoms market.

Recently Released Market Study: Pre-Paid Cards in Mexico

LogoAccording to a study named "Money Laundering" conducted by the Congress, roughly US$10.0 billion was laundered in Mexico during 2012, which represented slightly over 3% of the country's GDP. It took almost two years for the law initiative, sent by former president Felipe Calderon to the Congress in 2010, to see the light in August 2012, when the so-called "Ley Antilavado" (anti-money laundering law) was finally approved. Under this new law, a group of "vulnerable activities" was delineated,...

Report Published: "France Power Report Q2 2014"

LogoThe government is taking steps to reduce France's dependence upon nuclear power, and by end-2014, it is expected to adopt a law to determine how to do this. This follows on from President Hollande's electoral promise to curb the use of nuclear power. But non-government bodies, such as the Renewable Energy Syndicate, believe that the government is not moving fast enough to meet its target - that 50% of electricity is generated by non-nuclear sources in 2025. We highlight that the government's position on nuclear energy continues to be relatively ambiguous, and we have seen signs that President Francois Hollande might backtrack on his promise to reduce the share of nuclear energy to 50% by 2025. So what are the alternatives to nuclear power? Investors are turning away from gas - hydraulic fracturing for shale gas is off the agenda, and problems with LNG supply from Algeria in late 2013, and rising coal imports limit the opportunities here. Whether or not renewable energy can take advantage of the opportunities for investment remains to be seen.

New Market Research Report: Serbia Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q2 2014

LogoWhile per capita expenditure on drugs is increasing steadily, Serbia's overall pharmaceutical market is still underdeveloped. Serbia frequently faces medicine shortages, as some retailers and pharmacists are unable to earn profits from the sale of these medicines, which is impacting patients. As the country continues its economic convergence with developed Europe, drug consumption is expected to rise. Meanwhile, financial inefficiencies within the health insurance system compel the National Health Insurance Institution (RZZO) to make frequent changes to coverage and pharmaceutical pricing. We therefore believe that the state must seriously consider expanding its pharmaceutical budget to improve care and patient outcomes, especially considering Serbia's ageing population and the associated burden of chronic diseases. The Serbian pharmaceutical market's high price-sensitivity will constrain the market's short-term potential, although we are optimistic towards the market's long-term growth prospects.
