The history of electric vehicles dates back to the 1830s when Scottish inventor Robert Anderson invented the first electric carriage powered by non-rechargeable primary cells. American inventor William Morrison built the first successful electric automobile in 1891 and by the beginning of the 20th century, more than 1 in 4 cars were powered by electricity. However, by the 1920s electric cars ceased to be a viable commercial product due to the ready supply of petrol and the vehicle’s lack of horsepower.

BMI projects that the South African consumer electronics market will moderate in 2012, with estimated growth of 6%. The relative buoyancy of the retail sector was evident in 2011, with major retailers enjoying brisk trade in the pre-Christmas period. Retailers reported strong sales of large-screen TV sets, with models in the ZAR9,000 range proving popular. Combined with relatively low inflation and low interest rates, customers are spending on bigger ticket items such as PCs and notebooks, thereby boosting the industry. While we acknowledge various vulnerabilities such as high personal debt levels, we hold to our wider view that the consumer electronics market will continue to grow in 2012.

Although Japan's commercial real estate market was surprisingly resilient in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in March, our most recent round of in-country interviews (conducted in December 2011) showed that there was a drop in rents, particularly for the office sub-sector. Between early and late 2011, rents largely dropped back slightly as a result of reduced demand from the US and eurozone, where debt fears have led to caution among international financial investors. However, demand for modern and earthquake-proof housing and logistics facilities is increasing steadily, providing opportunities for developers to begin new projects and complete existing ones.

At first glance, the newsflow from Argentina's insurance sector in Q211 looks good. There has been strong growth in premiums in both the non-life and the life segments through 2011. Several companies have highlighted that their Argentine businesses are contributing meaningfully to the development of their regional operations. Some players have confirmed that profitability has been improving. Unlike in other parts of the world in 2011, or Chile in 2010, there have not been major catastrophe losses. In the non-life segment, Australia's QBE has emerged as a major player. QBE bought HSBC La Buenos Aires Seguros from HSBC and has entered into a 10-year bancassurance deal with the latter's bank in Argentina. Meanwhile, many of the leading local groups continue to benefit from their associations with government-backed financial institutions, from the support of policy-holders who see their own interests as being closely aligned with mutual insurers, and/or strong brand names.

Total new vehicle sales in China fell 3.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in Q112, but marginal growth of 1% in March has kept sales volumes on course to meet BMI's forecast of 19.8mn units in 2012. This represents growth of 7% y-o-y, which is below the 8-10% forecast by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, but is still a solid improvement on the 2.6% growth of 2011, taking into account weaker economic growth and localised restrictions on car purchases.

BMI maintains its broadly optimistic outlook for Canadian port sector, indicating a strong base for growth at the country's ports. Total throughput will be driven by strong imports, boding well for ports and the shipping sector. We estimate that Canada's economy grew by 2.5% in real terms in 2011, which was a challenging and volatile year by any measure. We expect to see a full-year average growth figure of 2.0% for 2012. This trend should continue into 2013, when we expect GDP growth of 2.3%. Our outlook for Canada's shipping sector remains positive, with volumes set to be boosted by increasing imports as well as coal exports.

Across the four emerging BRIC countries, high mobile penetration has generated opportunities for mobile marketing initiatives. These initiatives have become popular among businesses as they have a broad reach, the ability to monitor responses, and can offer location-based promotions. As such, companies across a variety of industries have started developing mobile marketing strategies with increasing marketing budget allocations. The aim of mobile marketing varies across different industries, although the main focus is to develop promotions that target specific consumer groups and launch new service offerings. Mobile marketing in the BRIC countries currently takes the form of mass market campaigns that target customers through bulk messages. However, this is expected to change as marketers start utilizing location-based services, which will be driven by the increased penetration of smartphones and improved mobile infrastructure to enable accurate and high-bandwidth services. As such, BRICdata expects mobile marketing campaigns will become more personalized through using location-based promotional strategies.

The value of the Colombian construction industry recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.04% during the review period (2007-2011). This growth was fuelled by the significant levels of foreign investment the country received during the review period in areas such as mining and energy, as security improvements, steady economic growth, a stable political situation and business-friendly policies made the country increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The value of the Colombian construction industry is expected to register a CAGR of 7.33% over the forecast period (2012-2016). The Colombian infrastructure construction market accounted for 52.5% of the total value of the Colombian construction industry in 2011, and the value of the market recorded a strong CAGR of 12.71% during the review period.
