BMI expects Russia to spend up to US$92.7bn on defence in 2014 with this figure increasing to US $114.6bn in 2018. Unlike the United States which is looking to reduce its defence spending, Russia is able to spend lavishly on its armed forces. Remittances from hydrocarbon exports are greatly aiding Russia's defence expenditure.

After a peak in the 1990’s, crime in the US has been on a steep decline over the past twenty years. Alarming, however, is the fact that the country still has some of the highest rates of murder and violent crime, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault in the world. As a result, people are right to want to protect themselves. That's where A&P Self Defense steps in. A&P Self Defense has announced the grand opening of their online store to help people get the right non-lethal protection options to stay safe.

Fallout from revelations in Q313 that the US National Security Agency (NSA) conducted widespread surveillance on Brazilian citizens including Brazil's President, Dilma Roussef, has remained at the centre of security and defence developments in Brazil over the last quarter. With the possible exception of Germany, the Brazilian Government has issued the sternest condemnation of the NSA's surveillance programme. Not only did Roussef cancel an official state visit to Washington scheduled for September, but she also publicly chastised the United States at the UN General Assembly later that month. It is still unclear as to what longterm effects the NSA's actions will have on Brazil-US defence and security ties. However, given developments over the last quarter, BMI can confidently predict that this episode has far from run its course.

Malaysia has enjoyed a relatively stable post-election period; a sweeping victory for Prime Minister Najib Razak's political allies within the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) following the latest party election suggests that we could see further progress on fiscal reforms in 2014. Externally, the country faces tensions over China's activities and territorial disputes in the South China Sea region; some Islamist groups are also operating in Malaysia and neighbouring states. However, overall defence spending and procurement has been relatively static, which the 2014 budget seeing a cut in money available for military development.

The report examines the trends in Iran's current and future defence procurement, and the order of battle across its armed forces. The report's general conclusion is that, despite the domestic and diplomatic respite President Hassan Rouhani's tentative engagement with the US and the West may bring, Iran faces extreme economic and security challenges. Primarily, the fact that Israel has rejected the ongoing international overtures to Tehran means Iran is still at risk (albeit unlikely) of a unilateral strike from Israel. Other risks partly stem from Iran's controversial nuclear programme and also from its unpopular support for the Assad regime in Syria. International sanctions have gutted Iran's oil exports, which have now sunk to less than half of their usual level. However, given the improvement in international relations caused by Iran's engagement with West, BMI has revised the real GDP growth forecasts this quarter, and is projecting an improved performance in real terms in 2014, up from our previous forecast of 2.4% growth. Iran's economy will return to growth in 2014, as improving relations with the West and better macroeconomic management, coupled with low base effects, will lead to an improved outlook for exports and increased business and consumer confidence.
