Domestic tourism demonstrated 21% current value growth and 11% growth in the number of trips in 2013. This compared with a CAGR of only 6% in current value terms and a negative CAGR of 3% in the number of trips over the review period. Whilst in value terms domestic tourism grew over the review period with a dip in 2009 due to the recession, the number of trips declined during the economic recession in 2008, and also in 2011 and 2012, when the economy did not perform very well. In 2013, however, the number of trips increased for two reasons; first, as a result of the improved economic conditions, and second, due to the long Eid and Ramadan holidays, which coincided with the summer period, which meant people took longer holidays in the summer of 2013.

Smoking in Italy has been on a steady, long-term negative trajectory. Not only has the prevalence of smoking among the overall population dropped sharply in recent years, the intensity of the habit among smokers has also fallen. According to the Italian Observatory of Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs (OSSFAD), average daily cigarette consumption in Italy declined from 16 to 13 cigarettes between 2002 and 2012. Not surprisingly, tobacco packaging in Italy saw a further decline in volume sales in 2012, affecting all packaging types, with the exception of flexible paper/plastic. While the carton of 20 cigarettes remains the overwhelmingly dominant pack size sold in Italy, growth has been better in smaller sizes, as consumers cut back on their daily intake of cigarettes. Much of this decline is due to aggressive governmental policy aimed at achieving important reductions in smoking prevalence in Italy, particularly among the younger segments of the population. In addition to the ban on smoking in indoor public places, including offices, bars, restaurants and discos, which was implemented in 2005, recent increases in cigarette taxes and the minimum price for cigarettes has increased the unit price of cigarette packs significantly. In addition, this multi-pronged strategy implemented by the Italian government has included aggressive education and awareness campaigns aimed primarily at younger people.

In 2011 and 2012, soft drinks packaging unit volume recorded positive growth, driven by volume sales growth in major soft drinks categories, including bottled water, carbonates and RTD coffee. Bottled water and carbonates, which generate the largest share of soft drinks packaging, registered positive volume sales growth and RTD coffee also posted strong volume sales growth in 2011 and 2012. Driven by the volume sales growth of these major soft drinks categories, unit volume of soft drinks packaging continued to increase in 2011 and 2012. However, the pace of packaging unit volume growth was slower in 2012 due to the slower volume sales growth of soft drinks in most product categories.

In 2012, home care packaging posted moderate unit volume growth backed by sales volume growth of major product categories and volume growth of relatively small-sized packs. In the home care market, relatively small packs have maintained a significant share in many product categories, including hand dishwashing, liquid detergents and liquid fabric softeners, as the number of small households such as single-person households increased rapidly in South Korea over the review period. In addition, manufacturers frequently introduced promotional packs such as bundle packs, which consist of a regular pack and a refill pack at a discounted price, and many consumers who look for value for money often purchased these promotional packs instead of purchasing large-sized packs.

There was a significant increase in arrivals to the UK in 2013. The legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games, alongside focused marketing from VisitBritain in Russia, China and Brazil, certainly played a part in this. Additionally, a number of royal events in the second half of the review period, such as the Queen's Jubilee, the royal wedding and the birth of a royal baby all helped to raise the profile of the UK's cultural heritage internationally, as has the worldwide success of the television series Downton Abbey. This has been reflected in the UK's increased international competitiveness. Those specific attractions that are internationally associated with the country - and therefore have a large proportion of international visitors, such as the Tate Modern - have benefited from this. Domestically the trend towards the "staycation" continued in 2013, meaning that there was the further growth of domestic visitors to tourist attractions, whether this be driven by those tourists on longer-term visits to different regions of the country, or specifically by daytrips.

The tradition of cigar/cigarillos smoking in the Dominican Republic is a longstanding one. Since colonial times, tobacco is at the core of the Dominican economy. One reflection of that is that one of the only five tobacco factories in the whole Spanish Empire in the XVIIIth century, was in Santo Domingo. As a consequence, its consumption has always been welcomed and appreciated. In many ways and in traditional circles, tobacco connoisseurship has always been equated with pride for what is Dominican. As a consequence of that background, higher-income Dominican men embrace the smoking of premium cigars and that is reflected in the spread of specialty shops and cigar clubs. Another pocket of consumption comes from lower-income (and also male) Dominicans. This group prefers machine-manufactured standard and small cigars at lower price points, and cigarillos. They buy mostly from independent small grocers. A third pocket of consumption comes from tourists. Helped by the growing reputation of having some of the finest handmade cigars in the world, most tourists buy cigars for consumption during their visit and for taking away, and as such they are the main consumers of handmade, premium cigars sold in the country.

Traditionally, cigars have been consumed mainly by middle-high and mainly high-income men who tend to be about 50 years old and above. Cigar consumption has been linked for many years to a luxurious habit created by the high price of the main brands which are Cuban. The local culture has been quite chauvinistic, which is why even though this is changing, women still are not willing to be seen smoking cigars in public. Still, in Ecuador, cigars have not developed much due to the strong penetration of cigarettes.
