The second annual community event, Better U - Mind, Body and Soul, will be conducted this Saturday, 29 May 2010, from 10 am to 5 pm at Dubai Knowledge Village. The non-profit event will feature over a 100 free activities, prizes and live performances for all members of the public. The free activities will include language classes, yoga and martial arts sessions, life coaching, zumba and tango dancing classes, career counselling and loads more. All activities will be completely free and open to all members of the public.

On Friday, May 28, there will be an end of the year celebration for parents and students of the YWCA’s Project Inspire program at James Lick High School in the East Side Union High School District. Project Inspire, now in its third year, is a youth empowerment program providing credit recovery for high school students to enable them to receive a high school diploma. This year, 216 students who would not have graduated from high school will be receiving diplomas because of Project Inspire. “The YWCA is so proud to be able to impact the lives of these students”, said Keri McLain, CEO of the YWCA Silicon Valley. “Many of these students had fallen so far behind at school that they didn’t see any way to complete high school. Our staff at Project Inspire showed the students that if they worked hard, they could change the course of their lives.”

DCTV’s New York City Tour has concluded, visiting seven high schools in five days. The tour was a resounding success, reaching hundreds of students in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Over the past week, students have been actively engaging with DCTV presenters, responding to films and powerful stories and offering insight into the causes of and solutions to gun violence. Beyond Bullets visited Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Hunts Point, Harlem and the Lower East Side, speaking to middle- and high-school students, most of whom have felt a direct impact of gun violence. When asked if they know someone who has been killed by a gun, almost every hand in the room went up. In a classroom in Harlem, a quarter answered that they have lost someone this year.
