Unilever North America announced it has achieved 100 percent zero waste to landfill (ZLF) at all dedicated distribution centers in North America. To achieve ZLF, the company has adopted the four 'R' approach — firstly reducing waste at source then reusing, recovering or recycling any non-hazardous waste that remains. It has meant reconsidering every single material that is consumed in a factory and distribution center — from reusing packing materials from supplier deliveries to food waste from staff cafeterias. Unilever says reducing waste sent for disposal is a critical component of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan. Established in 2010, the plan aims to halve the company's environmental footprint of the making and use of its products by 2020. This is being achieved through collaboration, partner education and reducing the company's environmental impact.

Industries began using asbestos in the 1800s for a wide variety of purposes. Over the years, asbestos has been used in the construction and automotive industries, among numerous others, and these minerals contain thin microscopic fibers which may be breathed into the lungs. Over time, health problems tend to develop for those with regular exposure to the minerals. For this reason, the government now demands that landlords and duty holders manage any materials which contain asbestos. RJS Waste Management offers asbestos surveys (rjswastemanagement.co.uk/asbestos-survey-types.php) for those in need of this type of work.

Studies conducted by the Health and Safety Executive reveal in excess of 8,000 occupational related cancer deaths each year in Great Britain with greater than half of those being attributed to past exposure to asbestos. This substance is also responsible for an estimated 600 annual deaths resulting from asbestosis. Though the use of asbestos has vastly declined since the discovery of its far reaching health risks in the early 1940's, it continues to linger in some older structures.
