For the second consecutive year, Transdiaspora Network (TDN) is commemorating the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) on Thursday October 13th, 2011, 7:30pm, at Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW). The Chef’s Academy, the Culinary Division of Harrison College, a 108-year-old, nationally accredited institution that offers 38 degree programs in five schools of study, celebrated the grand opening of the school’s North Carolina division on Sept. 29 with more than 400 guests in attendance. In conjunction with September’s Hunger Action Month, a national movement of the food bank networks to end domestic hunger, the event hosted a Triangle Chef Showdown which raised funds and awareness of local hunger through the donation of 85,902 meals. All proceeds received were donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

The Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law has announced that Dean Melissa Essary has announced her intention to step away from the dean’s position after six years and return to full-time faculty responsibilities at Campbell University’s law school, effective July 1, 2012. Essary made history in 2006 when she became the first woman dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. She led the relocation planning that moved the school from Buies Creek, N.C. to downtown Raleigh in September 2009, as well as increased law school applications to record levels; grew the student body from 345 in 2006 to the current 477, accompanied by a significant increase in the academic credentials of entering students; achieved the highest minority enrollment in the history of the law school; and continued the law school’s tradition of having the highest overall bar passage rate in North Carolina on the July bar exam over the past 25 years, among other accomplishments. Provost Dwaine Greene will convene the search committee to conduct a national search for the next dean of the law school.
